Barrow Mill self-catering, holiday cottages at Alwinton, near Rothbury in Northumberland, are a group of stone built, tastefully converted farm buildings situated in Northumberland’s National Park at the head of the beautiful Coquet Valley. Visitors to Barrow Mill will find themselves in an extremely peaceful location surrounded by spectacular countryside, in the heart of the Cheviot Hills, this is a wonderful unspoilt area ideal for walking, fishing and cycling. Although the cottages are found in a tranquil setting they are still convenient to Rothbury, ‘The capital of Coquetdale’, situated in central Northumberland and an excellent central point to explore the surrounding tourist destinations of The Roman Wall, The Scottish Borders, Alnwick Castle and Gardens and the magnificent Northumberland Coastline.

The Coquet Valley is considered as the gentlest of the Cheviot valleys and its landscape is as varied and interesting as it is beautiful. A perfect setting for fishing, the River Coquet is popular with anglers fishing for both salmon and trout and indeed as the fishing rights are privately owned by Barrow Mill, fishing can be arranged for visitors on the river, only 200 metres from the cottages.

There are three National Trust properties conveniently close to Barrow Mill. Cragside House, formerly the home of the famous inventor Lord Armstrong, Wallington Hall, stands on the remains of a former castle and boasts a remarkable collection of doll’s houses and Lady’s Well, an ancient well, thought to have been constructed by the Romans, is only a few miles from the cottages.

We have been welcoming visitors to our tastefully converted self-catering cottages at Barrow Mill for a number of years. We offer a peaceful, get-away-from-it-all setting for our visitors to enjoy the stunning surroundings of the Upper Coquet Valley. And with some of the most beautiful and unspoilt countryside you can find anywhere in the country it’s no wonder so many of our guests return year after year.
